ACCREDITATION

St. Mary’s School is accredited by the State of Idaho, all teachers and principal are certified.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The program is designed to enrich the educational experience of our students and offer them a varied, fun social environment to fill their after school hours. The After School program is for school age children, grades 1-6 only. Hours: 3:00-6:00 p.m. Please see fee schedule for cost information.

Should there be unexpected school closure due to the weather or other conditions, the After School program will normally be in operation.

We no longer offer such services as a holiday/teacher workday program.

ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL

Arrival Children are expected to be on time for school. School starts with assembly at 8:25 a.m. The school day is 8:25 - 2:55. For families who need it, supervision is provided at no extra cost starting at 7:30 am.

Dismissal - As a school, we must be concerned and have procedures that will guarantee adequate supervision for the students. All children (unless they are in the After School Program) are expected to leave the premises promptly at 2:55 p.m. Children on the premises after 3:15 p.m. will be placed in the After School Program. The proper safety and supervision of your child before and after school are of paramount interest to all of us. To properly insure your child is well cared for before and after school, your cooperation in adhering to the following guidelines will be appreciated. To that end:

1. Parents who pick their child up, we ask that you do so by 3:15 since supervision is guaranteed until then. If you are going to be late, please call the school so that your child has the necessary supervision until you arrive.

2. Children who ride the bus must follow the directions of the supervisor.

3. Students who walk home should leave immediately.

Exception: If you as parents are working (volunteering) at the school and you choose to have your school-age child remain until you are finished, then your child will be under the direction of either yourself or be in the After School Program.

ASBESTOS

In 1986 Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Response Emergency Act, referred to as AHERA. Parts of the requirements were that every school be inspected for the presence of asbestos in any of the building materials. The reason for this is that there is evidence that asbestos may be a health hazard under certain conditions and above certain amounts. Since the primary danger is from the inhalation of the very small fibers, there is most concern with the asbestos that can become airborne easily; but even hard substances e.g., floor tiles can emit fine particles under certain conditions (like sanding or drilling) and therefore, all asbestos was searched out.

St. Mary’s School is inspected periodically by an Environmental Protection Agency certified inspector. All suspect material has been sampled which was assumed to contain asbestos, and the condition and hazard potential of the asbestos-containing building material was assessed. All materials with a hazard have been removed. We have since received a certification to this effect and air quality samples show no particles.

We have a management plan detailing all asbestos related activities pertaining to the school. If you wish to examine the plan, or have any questions, please contact me. We will continue to comply fully with all government regulations, insuring a healthy and safe environment for all who work, play and visit us.

ATTENDANCE

Irregular attendance greatly interferes with a student’s progress. It is important, therefore, for all students to be present and on time every day. Illness of students, quarantines, or serious illness or death in the family constitutes reason for lawful absence.

The parents (guardian) must call the school by 9:00 am to inform the school their child will be absent

Missed assignments due to absenteeism are to be completed within a reasonable time as determined by the classroom teacher

No students will be allowed to leave the school premises prior to regular dismissal without parental permission

Parents requesting early dismissal are to check the student out through the teacher by sending a written note no later then the morning of the appointment

BUS SERVICES

St. Mary’s School contracts bus services with the Moscow Public Schools. Children will be picked up and delivered to St. Mary’s on Lincoln Street, east of the playground. If you have questions or concerns about pick up or delivery times please contact the Bus Garage at 882-3933.

CHURCH BEHAVIOR

Appropriate behavior in church will be expected, taught and enforced. We encourage and teach the students to participate actively in the weekly liturgies. As parents it would be helpful to remind your children how to receive the Eucharist in their hands:

Hands are cupped and lifted to accept the Host. After accepting the Host, one steps aside, places the Host in his/her mouth and returns to the pew.

Students who have not received their First Communion or are not of the Catholic faith are encouraged to come and receive a blessing. Folding arms across the chest is a sign of asking for a blessing.

COMMUNICATION

As parents responsible for your child’s education, we as a school want to provide ways of effectively communicating with you. Three ways are:

1. A monthly packet with updated calendar and lunch menus for the month, financial billings etc. (Please save packet and send back to the school each month.)

2. Our E-mail is checked daily at office@stmarysmoscow.com and we also look forward to sending pertinent information via e-mail to those who have access, otherwise it will be included in your monthly packet or classroom folder.

3. Weekly information packet sent home in your child’s classroom folder.

DONATION OF SOFTWARE

Before purchases or donations are made, please check with the school (classroom teacher and/or principal) to be assured that such software will fit current curriculum needs.

DRESS CODE (See also Personal Property)

St. Mary’s School does not have a uniform. It does have a dress code. These are simple guidelines for clothes appropriate to the school setting and weather conditions:

Students clothing shall be neat and clean, which will show respect for

themselves, their classmates and the reputation of the school.

Clothes, style and color of hair etc. shall not be a distraction to either the educational process or other students.

Clothes worn shall be appropriate to the season, which means shorts may be worn on hot days. Normally this is fall and spring, not winter.

Winter clothes for most students should include hat, mitten/gloves, boots and a winter jacket, not just a sweatshirt.

To live these guidelines, students at St. Mary’s will not be able to wear:

Clothes endorsing drugs, alcohol, tobacco advertisements

Clothes with offensive, abrasive or obscene language

Clothes that reveal midriffs; underclothing etc. (Tank tops may be worn if they have another shirt underneath).

If students choose to wear such clothing as listed or any other inappropriate clothing/styles as judged by the faculty or principal, the student will be removed from class until it is rectified.

*As of 1996, St. Mary’s School has adopted a specific T-shirt/sweatshirt. We request that it be worn at every Friday Mass and other designated days. All children are expected to have a T-shirt or sweatshirt as part of St. Mary’s School Community. Information and order forms will be sent home.

We ask that all jackets, gloves, sweatshirts, etc. be marked with the child’s name. Each year we give away many clothes that have no name and have not been claimed.

DRIVERS LICENSE...INSURANCE

To insure adequate coverage and safety for the students we are requesting that parent who volunteer as field trip driver need to fill out an Insurance and Licensing Information Form which we will be keep on file at the school. These forms will be sent home in the opening packet on the first day of school. Our policy at St. Mary’s states:

No motor vehicle will be requested or approved by the school for the transportation of school pupils to and from off-campus activities sponsored or approved by the school, including, but not limited to, athletic contests, dramatic presentations, concerts, field trips unless the vehicle is operated by a competent adult over the age of twenty-one (21) years, properly licensed, and with liability insurance, public injury and property damage insurance, and medical payments insurance, as detailed below.

The undersigned, as a person who may provide student transportation according to the policies above stated, certifies as follows: that I am an owner of the vehicle or vehicles described below and that I carry on each such vehicle insurance providing no less that three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000) bodily injury coverage, one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) property damage coverage, five thousand dollars ($5,000) medical expense coverage on each person, and fifteen thousand/thirty thousand dollars ($15,000/$30,000) underinsured motorist coverage, which insurance must be available as primary coverage for any claim within its coverage arising during or out of use of the vehicle for transportation of students.

If at any time I am requested to do so, I will have my insurance carrier furnish a certificate of such insurance to the Principal of the school, which certificate may require advance notice to the school of any change or modification or of any cancellation.

ST. MARY’S SCHOOL DISCIPLINE PLAN

Students are expected to behave in a manner that shows consideration and respect for others as Jesus would.  Each student will strive to be a part of and add to the positive atmosphere at the school.  Students accomplish this when they recognize their responsibilities and obligations in regard to the St. Mary’s School community.  The rights and dignity of each other will be respected at all times.  In order that the students may learn appropriate behavior, conduct inappropriate for a Christian student will result in disciplinary consequences.  Children require freedom to grow and to learn, but they will not thrive on unlimited freedom.  The aim of discipline is to make correct decisions for that individual.  To do this, reasonable limits that protect students from harm and teach them what is safe and what is not will be established.

No student has the right to impede or interrupt the learning process of another student.  Each one has the right to be safe while he/she is at school.  Behavior contrary to the above shall be dealt with in an expeditious manner, by the appropriate personnel (supervisor, teacher, principal).

Discipline is maintained in the classrooms or school when there are evidence of cooperative spirit among students, principal, teachers and staff.  Good discipline originates in the home. Parents realize they are the first teachers and it’s from them the child will develop good behavior habits and proper attitudes toward school.  To help the child, parents will need to:

  • Be familiar with school rules and encourage the student to comply with them; cooperation and support of the school is vital.

  • Recognize that the teacher takes the place of the parent while the child is in school.  It is important that the child respects the teacher accordingly.

  • Teach the child respect for the law, authority and the rights of others, as well as for private and public property.

  • Teach the child to be tolerant of classmates and others whose ways of life may be different.

  • Show an interest in school by attending school functions, taking part in school meetings, fund-raising projects and other school related activities.

  • Stress the importance of being ready for school work by monitoring materials, books and habits necessary for good school work.

At St. Mary's we are committed to helping each child develop self-control and self-discipline leading to maturity and responsibility as a Christian.  To achieve this goal it is necessary that all members of our school community--parents, teachers and students--understand and agree upon the guidelines and expectations as printed in this Handbook.  The school and home need to form a strong partnership in this effort, working together to create a Christian environment conducive to positive student development.

STANDARDS:

To ensure that all students receive equal educational opportunities students are expected to:

  1. Cooperate with the directions of staff members and comply with the rules of the classroom and school in a respectful manner.  The manner of speaking and dealing with one another will be that of respect in tone, words and actions towards all.

  2. Respect school and private property.

  3. Refrain from fighting and any other physical acts that may cause injury to people or property.

  4. Refrain from threats or verbal assaults including profanity, name-calling, racial or ethnic slurs, obscene gestures or acts of intimidation, such as bullying. Choosing to do any of these actions is certainly not acting from an attitude of "What Would Jesus Do?" and will not be tolerated by St. Mary's School.

Top

PROCESS:

The following steps will be implemented when expectations are breached:

  1. Teacher and student attempt resolution of the problem.  If not resolved then:

  2. Teacher contacts parent to share information and seek resolution.  If not resolved then:

  3. Teacher, parent and student meet with the Principal to develop a plan.

  4. Follow-up meeting takes place to assure plan has been effective.  If problem still exists then:

  5. Student may be suspended or expelled from school.

(Please note: If the principal and/or teacher judges the behavior as extreme and especially if it interferes with another student student's learning or safety, steps 1 and 2 will be skipped.)

The school administration may deem it necessary to require specialized professional care for students as a condition for continued enrollment.

Top

Suspension:

Suspension means a student will be excluded from the school property for a specified period of time. At the end of the period of suspension the student shall be readmitted to school, the administration judges that the child has learned from the experience and is ready to return to school.

  1. Emergency suspension:

A suspension in which the principal deems it necessary to immediately remove the student from school, without prior notice to the parents.  This will be done when, in the judgment of the principal, the student’s presence would pose a continuing danger to persons or property or an ongoing threat of disrupting the academic process.

(*When a student is placed on suspension that will require that s/he remains at school, the cost to have the student supervised will be charged to the parents/guardians.)

Top

Expulsion:

If it is determined by the school administration that a student’s continued presence in the school shall pose a continuing danger to persons or property and/or be an ongoing threat or disruption to the academic process and/or be detrimental to the student’s own welfare or the welfare of others, the student may be expelled.

  1. Normal Procedure for Expulsion would be:

  1. The principal will hold a conference with the parent(s)/guardian and the student to advise the family that expulsion is being contemplated unless there is immediate improvement in the student’s behavior.  A staff member may be present.  The principal shall notify and invite the pastor to the conference.

  2. If the student shows inadequate improvement in general behavior or commits another infraction which is cause for expulsion, the principal shall have a conference with the parent(s)/guardian and inform them that the student’s record will be reviewed.

  3. After the review with the pastor, the principal shall inform the parent(s) or guardian of the decision concerning expulsion.

  4. If the parent(s)/guardian fail without cause to attend any required conference, such conference shall be deemed waived by the parent(s)/guardian. The principal shall notify the parent(s)/guardian by letter accordingly.

  5. For a very serious offense as in the case of selling drugs, immediate expulsion shall take place.

  1. Due Process for Suspension and/or Expulsion:

  1. Any student who has been suspended or expelled may request permission to be readmitted.  A conference will be scheduled including the child, parents, pastor and the principal before the decision for re-admittance is made.  If the grievance is not resolved through the informal conference, the student, parent, or guardian may present a written grievance to the Pastor.  The decision of the Pastor will be final.

UNWRITTEN REGULATIONS

  1. This policy booklet is limited in content.  Emphasis has been placed on those things that are deemed most pertinent and beneficial to the students, parents, and personnel of St. Mary’s School at the present time.

  2. It would be impossible to anticipate all problems that may arise in the future. Yet each year a few distracting “fads” and circumstances show up on our school grounds.  Anything that distracts from or disrupts the spirit, education, philosophy, or dignity of St. Mary’s School will be held to be unacceptable even though not explicitly set forth in this Handbook.  Such situations will be dealt with in accordance with the principles implicit in our existing policies.

  3. The Principal has the right to amend this Handbook for a just cause.  If this occurs, prompt notice of changes will be given to the parents.
